This project began with five acres of windswept heavy clay quagmire, good views and five hundred abandoned railway sleepers.
The keynote for the design was fun and entertainment. We created a series of interconnected entertainment spaces along the west face of the house linked to a meadow/wildlife pond area beyond and below. The principal view to the west lay at an awkward angle to the main terrace area so a new strong axis was created terminating in a viewing platform deck that marked the transition from upper garden to lower wildlife garden. This was reinforced at night by flame torches.
Layers of semi transparent planting provide intimacy in the upper area in this exposed site. This included pleached hornbeam and a mass grass planting enclosing the upper lawn. Planting plan for this project was by Jane Thomas.
